Cabo San Lucas has grown from a sleepy oasis at the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula to one of the gems on the Pacific Coast. While many visit the Baja for its splendid beaches and relaxing atmosphere, hordes of anglers also flock to these waters in pursuit of abundant populations of billfish and in-shore species.

Cabo’s striped marlin population remains among the world’s most prolific, with stripers in the 100 to 175 pound range typical. It’s not uncommon to raise four to six in a day’s fishing, and many times, double that total will turn few heads. During the late spring and late fall, blue and black marlin move into local waters, often topping 400 pounds, and running over 700 on occasion. Sailfish are also found at times, along with plentiful numbers of wahoo, tuna and colorful dorado. And for those who prefer the elegant, combed profile of the roosterfish, the waters of the Baja are considered by most to be among the top two or three in the world, with daily opportunities for 40, even 50 pound trophies.
One of the big advantages of the Solmar’s location is that it can go to where fishing is best. During the winter months, for example, the best fishing is typically in the Pacific, to the west of Cabo. But during the spring and summer, the action switches to the Sea of Cortez, around the corner to the east. In either case, Solmar’s boats are within easy reach of the prime fishing grounds.
