Scott Lake’s location in the far reaches of Saskatchewan is far removed from any roads, any towns, any trappings of civilized life, except for those offered by its modern lodge. The pine studded shorelines hide the wanderings of moose, and black bear, and provide secure nesting for white crested bald eagles which soar overhead and observe anglers from tree top perches.
A cast arcs over the water and the spoon flutters out of focus. A crank of the reel begins the retrieve when soon the rod doubles over, violently throbbing from the head shakes and bulldog rushes of a trophy lake trout. This is what it’s all about. This is why you came to Scott Lake Lodge: for the chance at a trophy laker, or a big pike or exotic grayling.
This is ideal lake trout habitat: cold, clear water, lots of rocky shorelines and gradual drop offs. Lakers in the five- to 15- pound class are commonplace and most anglers will get into at least one 20 pounder during their visit. Far larger trout are possible, with 30, even 40 pounders taken annually. The lodge record is a hefty 47 pounder and lakers estimated to be over 50 pounds have been hooked and lost.
Want to try for pike? Scott’s got them, and they can get pretty large. Over 180 topped the coveted 18-pound mark during the 1995 season. Scott has plenty of weed-lined, protected bays which produce huge northerns. How about grayling, the flashy fighter of the north? They smack small spoons, jigs or spinners on an ultra-light outfit, or a carefully drifted dry fly. A very impressive 4.5 pounder is the camp record.
Fly fishing for Canadian species has become increasingly popular and Scott Lake Lodge has made sure they are well equipped to handle fly rodders. Guides are familiar with fly fishing methods and the lodge stocks a complete line of premium quality fly rods, reels and appropriate flies. Fly fishing gurus such as Lefty Kreh, Flip Pallot and Dan Blanton have fished Scott’s waters in recent years, and will be returning in 1996 to conduct on site schools and seminars.
Scott Lake has some of the clearest waters in Mid-Canada, which makes stalking big northerns most effective.
The sprawling main lodge sits on a rocky point overlooking the lake, large picture windows offering a panoramic vista. Inside the attractive log building guests will find plenty of warm hospitality, and hearty, well prepared meals. A well-stocked tackle shop will supply that extra, potent lure or fly, and the bar has plenty of cold beer and pop. And when exhaustion finally takes over and sleep is the order of the day, modern cabins provide plenty of creature comforts, from full bathroom facilities, to heat, and electricity. Wake up each morning to a hot pot of coffee brought to your cabin door.
