Essential Backpacking Check List – The Outdoor Women

  • Pack and Pack Cover (or strong trash bag)
  • Tent and Groundcloth
  • Sleeping Bag – 20 degree rated
  • Sleeping Pad
  • Stove and Repair Kit
  • Fuel for Stove: approx. 16 oz/week
  • Cook Kit: w/pot lifter & stir spoon
  • Eating Utensils: bowl, spoon & mug
  • Biodegradable Soap & Scrubbie
  • Water Bottles, minimum 2 liters/quarts or “bladder” style container
  • Water Purification System; Pump, Iodine Tablets or Crystals
  • Mosquito Repellant
  • Flashlight/Headlamp and Batteries
  • Pocket knife – w/sissors is helpful
  • Whistle
  • Camera and Film
  • Maps, Compass, Trail Book… knowledge to use
  • A reliable watch – I recommend a Suunto watch as some models have a compass built in
  • Toilet Paper & Cat Hole Digger (plastic trowel) Hygiene Items: toothbrush, paste, comb, lotion/aloe, etc…
  • Sun Screen
  • First Aid Kit: include Space Blanket & Ace Bandage
  • Aspirin, Advil, etc…
  • Boots: Mid-weight – broken in!
  • Sandals or Tennies (light): for river crossings & campwear
  • Foot Repair Kit; ** 2nd Skin, Tape, Compeed, Moleskin
  • Socks 2 pair (mid-weight, not cotton) I use a mid-weight by itself… sometimes w/poly pro liners
  • 2 pair polypro (wicking) liner socks
  • 2 pair Shorts (at least one non-cotton recommended)
  • 2 T-Shirts or Polypro equivalent – I prefer cotton here, but do carry one non-cotton Polypro
  • Top & Bottom long johns (light to mid-weight)
  • Gloves – mid-weight
  • Warm Hat: wool or polypro… or headband, if you have a warm hood
  • Sun Hat; baseball cap…
  • Fleece Jacket or Wool Sweater
  • Rain Gear: jacket w/hood (preferably waterproof) and over-pants
  • Sunglasses
  • FOOD & WATER (minimum 2 liters)
  • 50′ nylon cord: to hang food (from Bears)
  • Optional ·Repair Kit; for punctures, tears of equipment
  • ·5 Gal Water Jug: cut off top, cut side handles (wash basin)
  • ·Book, Journal, Sketch/Art Stuff – pencil/pen
  • ·Walking Stick/Adj Ski Pole: wrap duct tape around top of pole
