Lake Obabika is a fertile watershed that hosts huge populations of feisty smallmouth bass. Although you can drive right to the lodge, there’s no public access so fishing pressure is limited to lodge guests and the potential for fast action and trophy smallies remains strong. Two- to three-pound bass are common and anglers could tangle with even larger bass. The typical Ontario bass lake often turns out its best fishing during the early weeks of the season, late May through mid-June. But historically Obabika’s cold, clear waters produce better sport later in the summer, starting in early July, when the days are warmer and sunny.
The Lake Obabika watershed meanders alluringly with “mysterious” protected coves and rocky arms providing excellent smallmouth cover. Obabika’s property also contains quite a few smaller, “portage” lakes that provide additional bass action. The portages are easy and many guests quickly become enamored of fishing these smaller lakes with the-away-from-it-all feel and ample supplies of feisty bass, some of which will rival the heft of those from the main lake.There’s opportunities for northern pike and lake trout, even the occasional brookie as well, but it’s the smallmouth that draws the major share of the angling attention.
Lake Obabika Lodge’s facilities are among the finest in Canada. They have been accorded the highest ratings possible by the Canadian Board of Tourism.
The main lodge overlooks the lake in a secluded cove, with a broad lawn and sandy beach sprawling out front. Inside guests will find a variety of facilities, from the elegant lounge area to the fully stocked bar, and inviting dining room. There’s even an outside veranda for enjoying a last cup of coffee or a special Canadian sunset. The nearby dock house has exercise room, billiard/pool table, large screen TV, even a sauna and jacuzzi for soothing muscles stressed from a hard day on the water.
Meals are always a special treat at Obabika, a source of tremendous pride by the owners. Four to six course dinners are typical, all prepared in gourmet style by the lodge’s chef.
And when guests retire to their individual log cabins, they’ll find the same luxury in each unit, including full shower and bathroom facilities, living room, color TV, even in- room fridge.
Lake Obabika is owned and operated by the Herburger family. Natives of Austria, they brought their rich European traditions and sense of style to this Ontario oasis. Markus Herburger is a master cabinetmaker, and personally supervised the construction of the lodge. You can see his talented hand at every turn. Lodge manager Peter Herburger makes sure everything runs smoothly, from the meals to the fishing.
The Herburger family also operates Obabika Island which is a very comfortable two-bedroom cottage located five minutes (by boat) from the main lodge. It accommodates up to four persons and is perfect for anglers or families who would like total privacy and preparingtheir own meals.
Packages can begin and end any day of the week preferred, and can include as many days of fishing as one desires. There’s a raft of non-fishing activities available as well, making Lake Obabika Lodge a perfect family destination as well as a good choice for the serious smallmouth angler.
